5 Quick Questions with Mitchell

What is your favorite condition to treat?

With how complex the eye is, it is hard to pick just one! I would ultimately have to choose Dry Eye Syndrome also known as Keratoconjunctivitis Sicca. Whether it is lack of tear production, inflammation, evaporative tear films, or blocked oil glands in the eye lids, dry eye comes in many shapes and forms, but luckily for patients, so do our treatments! Dry eye is one of my favorite conditions to treat because, as my patients will tell you, artificial tears are just the tip of the iceberg. Treating dry eye allows me to fully extend my knowledge and skill base. From medicated tears to different in-office dry eye procedures, I have the ability to tailor each treatment plan to the patient and their symptoms. Treating dry eye not only can help the feeling of the patient’s eyes, but believe it or not can help the quality of their vision too! Just because the eyes do not feel dry, does not mean you are not looking through the dryness.

How did you choose Venice, Florida?

My choice to come down to Venice, FL was easy! My parent’s and additionally my girlfriend’s parents had moved down to FL while we were in PA School. I enjoyed spending my summer or winter vacations down here. I loved the people, the water, and most of all the weather!

Why did you choose Ophthalmology?

Ironically, ophthalmology is one of the least common specialties employing Physician Assistants, making it the last field I ever expected to pursue as a PA student. As I progressed through my education and clinical training, however, I realized I was looking for a specialty that was hands-on, intellectually stimulating, offered meaningful patient relationships, and provided a strong sense of professional fulfillment. Naturally, I was drawn to specialties such as Emergency Medicine, General Surgery, and OB-GYN.

Everything changed when a family member introduced me to Dr. Kane. Although I was initially hesitant, I decided to take the opportunity to complete a rotation with him and explore the field of ophthalmology. At the time, ophthalmology received very little attention in PA school, and many of my professors questioned whether it was a worthwhile rotation given the limited career opportunities available for PAs in the specialty.

From my very first days working alongside Dr. Kane, I quickly realized that ophthalmology embodied everything I had been searching for. I became fascinated by the complexity of the eye, the precision of its surgeries and procedures, and the challenge of diagnosing and managing both common and rare ocular diseases. Most rewarding of all was witnessing the profound impact that restoring or preserving a patient’s vision has on their quality of life. Few experiences in medicine compare to helping someone regain the gift of sight, and the gratitude expressed by patients is truly invaluable.

Under Dr. Kane’s mentorship, I have developed a strong foundation in ophthalmic medicine, gaining confidence in clinical examination, diagnosis, procedures, patient counseling, and medical decision-making. His guidance has shaped not only my clinical skills but also my passion for the specialty.

Although Physician Assistants in ophthalmology remain relatively uncommon, I am proud to be part of this unique and growing community. It is a privilege to contribute to preserving and restoring vision, and I look forward to making a meaningful difference in the lives of my patients through exceptional eye care.

Tell me a fun fact about you.

I am very interested in bird photography. I of course fell down the rabbit hole of appreciating the abundance and exoticness of Florida birds. I frequently travel the state to do bird photography and always bring my camera with me when I am away from home, because you never know what birds you will see. I have a running list of species I have encountered and a whole folder of my pictures.

Another interesting fact about me is, I rescued a 2-year-old fluffy French Bulldog named Mabel.

What lies ahead for you in the coming year?

I am excited to gain more autonomy, more patients, and more knowledge!
